Why should personal injury lawyers use mediation?

Hi all,

I saw this story Lawsuit over SMPD crash goes to mediation and was interested to note that a judge had ordered the parties to mediate this personal injury dispute. I practice in the UK and have a background in personal injury litigation but there is a very marked reluctance on the part of personal injury lawyers in the UK to use mediation.

It seems in California at least that mediation has developed well enough for courts to refer parties, even in relatively low value cases. I wonder then what the attitude is to mediation in personal injury cases. Do lawyers choose it willingly or does it only happen when judges order it to?

If any of you are personal injury lawyers who use mediation why do you? What would you say to reluctant UK lawyers to persuade them there is anything in it for them?
