LA Mediators

Mediators of Southern California

Happy Saturday LA Mediators...

It's a nice sunny day, and we're going to have the best year yet at LA Mediators! Thanks to everyone who came by and brought food and drink at my place. Terri and I had a great time, and enjoyed all the fun and laughter. And special thanks to Bob Mayer who helped teach my daughter a drinking song from Cal! Nothing says party like your 19 year old daughter singing a drinking song...She is class of 2012, he is class of 1961. Good to know Berkeley has it's own drinking song that has endured the test of time...I'm not sure how they survived Prohibition there...

On to business:

We're going to have our Feb. 10 meeting at the Judicate West office in West LA, 12400 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 850, Los Angeles CA 90025 at 6:00 p.m. I've reserved the largest conf. room there but we can squeeze maybe 20 so space will be limited.

The topic is near and dear to the hearts of all mediators who want to make a living: Mediation: The Attorneys Perspective. OK, so I know I've said it a thousand times, but remember that the attorneys drive the professional mediation business. If lawyers aren't picking you to mediate, you are starving or doing community mediations or divorce mediations. Or you need a divorce mediator because you're broke. Therefore, I want to do this program again and again in Orange County, the Valley, the IE, everywhere mediators want to be busy and successful.

We will have a panel of 3 top attorneys whose firms are frequent users of paid mediations. Not the bums who pick free mediators ...(not that there's anything wrong with that...)

There is no subject off limits. I am generally positive and like to hear what they like. But each is instructed to be blunt and honest about what does NOT work. Horror stories are instructive. The names will be changed to protect the guilty. Questions and discussion will be encouraged. And maybe you impress these lawyers with your skill, charm and wit and you have a chance to earn your way onto their short list. (This is the path to gold in the mediation business btw...)

No one who attends will come away without some new insight. Each has mediated with the top paid and richest mediators in town and will share their perspective on how they worked magic in the mediation. I like that stuff, and hope you do too.

So please mark your calendars and Kym will follow up with how to sign up. But, keep in mind we are going to have to enforce the attendance limit due to space...and if you don't make the cut this time you are first in for the next show.

See you in February...

Your President

Bob Tessier

This program is a practical training course. While covering theory to give you a framework and the intellectual understanding of negotiation and mediation, this course is about learning. Our focus is on your doing, practicing and experimenting with negotiating and mediating. There is much to teach about mediation and negotiation, but one reason mediators fail is because they understand the theory, but cannot execute it when under the gun. In this course, you will mediate and negotiate your way…See More

We volunteer and we gripe.  We go to “networking” events, and don’t feel comfortable there or don’t know what to do.  Many of those trying to establish a career in mediation come from prior careers in law, mental health or education.  These three careers are among the weakest at marketing and self-promotion.  Our industry suffers unnecessarily because so many are highly skilled at mediating, and yet lack the skills that enable them to secure the opportunity to actually mediate.  In this course,…See More
