LA Mediators

Mediators of Southern California

Mark you Calendars for May 26: "So you want to join a panel?"

Dear LA Mediators

It is hard to top a night of wine, pasta, Irish ballads, and a room full of lawyers having a good time...

I was pleased to see so many LA Mediators at the party and I saw plenty of examples of mediators displaying their "A" game making contacts and marketing. The IABA is the perfect venue, and we will debrief and talk about your optimum strategy in this setting down the road.

But onto our May meeting: So you want to join a panel? I put this title in question form because that is the topic of our discussion. I know some very talented mediators who do their own thing and don't join a panel. Others are successful joining a panel. Many aren't sure about whether to set that as a goal.

Therefore, we're going to have a couple of guest speakers who are part of ADR Providers come to us to speak on what they have to offer, how best to position yourself to be in demand for a panel position, and what they expect from you. Anyone who has ever considered a career as a professional mediator with a panel will be very interested in the discussion.

We're also going to talk about what ADR practice areas are in the most demand. Remember, to be successful you've got to give the customer what it wants...and we'll gain some good insight from our panelists by way of example. In all, I want the point of this meeting as many others to be to de-mystify the path to success. The panel is one way there.

As usual, we are very limited on space. We can seat maybe 12-15. Active (read: paid) members have first dibs on a seat at the table. After that we open it up.

So please rsvp to the ning site, and/or contact Kym to reserve a place.

Your president

Bob Tessier

This program is a practical training course. While covering theory to give you a framework and the intellectual understanding of negotiation and mediation, this course is about learning. Our focus is on your doing, practicing and experimenting with negotiating and mediating. There is much to teach about mediation and negotiation, but one reason mediators fail is because they understand the theory, but cannot execute it when under the gun. In this course, you will mediate and negotiate your way…See More

We volunteer and we gripe.  We go to “networking” events, and don’t feel comfortable there or don’t know what to do.  Many of those trying to establish a career in mediation come from prior careers in law, mental health or education.  These three careers are among the weakest at marketing and self-promotion.  Our industry suffers unnecessarily because so many are highly skilled at mediating, and yet lack the skills that enable them to secure the opportunity to actually mediate.  In this course,…See More
